The grounds of Eagle Island will open for visitors on June 15, 2022. As in years past the trails throughout the Island will remain closed until early July to allow birds to fledge their nests.
Please Note: There has been a considerable amount of mold found throughout the house/museum and library and as a result the house and library will be off limits to the public until further notice. The State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands is actively working on removing any mold as quickly as possible. When it is determined the house is safe to tour it will again be open to the public.
It has recently been brought to our attention that the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands has received funds to address the mold situation in the Peary house on Eagle Island. The current plan is to keep (only the house/museum and library) closed for the 2022 season and to begin the restoration in 2023. With restoration plans scheduled for summer 2023, it is believed that the island will be closed for visitors in 2023. Anyone interested in visiting Eagle Island and the historic landmark should make arrangements to visit in 2022 or make plans to visit in 2024 once the island has been reopened.
The Friends of Peary’s Eagle Island will be providing docents daily to answer questions, show our new video, sell water and souvenirs in the Trading Post and make a visit to Eagle Island as enjoyable as possible. The Welcome Center will be open from June 15 to closing day.
