Eagle Island Update as of 2023

The grounds of Eagle Island will open for visitors on June 15, 2023. As in years past the trails throughout the Island will remain closed until early July to allow birds to fledge their nests.

Please Note: There has been mold found throughout the house/museum and library and as a result entry to the house and library will be off limits to the public until further notice. Park Staff understand that this can be disapointing and The State of Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands is actively working on removing any mold as quickly as possible. When it is determined the house is safe to tour it will again be open to the public.

Given the continued mold issue in the museum/house, the Bureau of Parks has been discussing options to enhance visitation on Eagle Island by offering special programs. Additional programs are under development but may include:

  • Art classes with local artists/ artist retreat
  • Stargazing/ celestial navigation program
  • Geology Program
  • Arctic exploration program
  • Explorer program (artic and otherwise)
  • Programs with Bowdoin Arctic Museum?
  • Birding program
  • Entomology program
  • Marine biology program
  • Create a space outside the museum for artifact exhibition
  • Scavenger hunt
  • Self-guided audio tour available via QR code
  • Interpretive panels (birds, geology, fish, sharks, lobster industry
